ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The Phoenix is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster a supportive, physically active community for individuals who are recovering from a substance use disorder and for those who choose to live sober. By participating in our physical, social and educational programs, participants build confidence, self-respect, and community. Activities offered include CrossFit, climbing, hiking, boxing, running, yoga, road and mountain biking, and strength training. Through traditional fundraising strategies and revenue-generating ventures, Phoenix is able to provide free programs for anyone with 48 hours of sobriety. The Phoenix currently operates in 45 communities across 24 states.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Phoenix is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to manage all facets of gym operations at our Boston facility, including Team Member satisfaction, facility maintenance, and community partnerships. This role will be responsible for managing staff and volunteer instructors, overseeing and growing the Boston area calendar of Phoenix programs, and spearheading fundraising and community relations efforts to maximize Phoenix's impact in Boston. Excellent social skills and the ability to connect with partner organizations, donors, participants, and the general public are essential. The ideal candidate will have significant supervisory experience, as well as business management skills and a background in fitness and/or adventure sports. A strong connection to The Phoenix mission and commitment to leading by example are critical to this position; preference will be given to those with personal experience in recovery from alcohol or a substance use disorder.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversee programming facilitated by staff and volunteer instructors, ensuring that events adhere to program-specific standards. Activities may include CrossFit, rock climbing (indoors or outdoors), yoga, hiking, mountain or road biking, running, group fitness classes, boxing, or Olympic lifting
Supervise program and administrative staff, including hiring, training, facilitating personal and professional development, conducting reviews, and completing disciplinary actions and terminations as needed
Recruit and develop a solid and sustainable base of volunteer instructors
Maintain facility and equipment and oversee daily administrative needs of the chapter
Ensure that program spaces are trauma-informed (accessible, clean, safe, and welcoming) and reflect The Phoenix's core values and community standards
Build collaborative and mutually beneficial relationships in the local recovery and fitness communities through partnerships with treatment centers, gymnasiums, yoga studios, recovery-based nonprofit organizations, and other mission-aligned organizations
Communicate with development leadership to establish and deploy ongoing fundraising initiatives
Analyze performance of chapter and programs and provide feedback, guidance, and training to impact results
Attend and participate in local and national staff meetings, as well as programming and partnership team meetings as needed
Review and respond promptly, accurately, and cordially to all inquiries
Be an ambassador for The Phoenix at all times
Fulfill other duties as assigned, including small- and large-scale projects
Work evening and weekend hours as needed
 

 QUALIFICATIONS

3-5 years' experience in a management and supervisory role preferred, especially in a nonprofit setting
Experience with budgets and program management preferred
Experience coaching, instructing, or leading one or more athletic disciplines
Certifications in relevant athletic disciplines (e.g., CF-L1, L-2, or L-3; NASM, NSCA, ACSM, or ACE Personal Trainer; AMGA-CWI, SPI, or Rock Guide; IMBA-L1; or YT-200) preferred but not required
First Aid Certification (e.g. WFR, WFA, CPR) preferred
Bachelor's degree preferred
Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate to people from all walks of life
Community relations skills and willingness to initiate introductions with potential partners
Knowledge and consistent demonstration of excellent customer service skills
Strong organizational skills, professionalism, and the ability to quickly adapt to change
Desire to pursue personal and professional development opportunities
Ability to use standard office equipment and computer software, including word processing, spreadsheet applications, and email
Entrepreneurial spirit, humility, and integrity
Lived experience as a peer in recovery preferred
