Job Description

 The Hyams Foundation envisions a society in which systems and structures are transformed to create the conditions for increased collective well-being and produce equitable power, access, opportunities and outcomes, regardless of race.  For this to happen, we believe that the people most affected by issues/problems must be engaged in and leading efforts to identify and develop solutions to address the root causes of the disparities.  The foundation provides grant and programmatic support for community organizing and advocacy efforts, particularly those that reflect an intersectional approach and are oriented towards collective action.

The Program Associate reports to the Program Director and works with program staff team to advance the Foundation’s goal of dismantling “persistent, racialized economic disparities” in Boston and Chelsea, Massachusetts through grant-making and strategic programming activities. The Program Associate will coordinate and handle several administrative responsibilities, support grantmaking, build and maintain relationships with grantees, assist with research, convenings and other events.

Essential Functions:

  • Support the program staff in developing, implementing and evaluating grantmaking strategies and strategic programming;
  • Assist the program team in tracking and reporting on grantmaking activities, including special initiatives and funder collaborations;
  • Conduct research and assist the program team as needed for strategy papers, memos and reports;
  • Prepare various written materials on a timely basis, including draft correspondence, strategy updates, and other related materials;
  • Coordinate with program staff on all aspects of meetings, convenings, and other events, including coordinating scheduling, invitations, meeting preparation and logistics, set-up and clean-up;
  • Track and complete the grant administration and monitoring process as delineated by the Grants Manager;
  • Work with Grants Manager to maintain grants and community contact information;
  • Take notes during program and board committee meetings to track and communicate discussion points and next steps;
  • Connect with grantees and community groups to stay informed of activities in the local communities;
  • Manage calendars and appointments, book travel and lodging, and fulfill other administrative responsibilities as needed; and
  • Participates in various foundation staff activities as needed.

Qualifications

Preparation, Knowledge, Previous Experience:

  • Associate degree required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred, and
  • 1-3 years community-based work experience, and
  • Prior experience with community organizing and/or advocacy efforts preferred.

  • Knowledge of racial and economic issues facing Boston and Chelsea communities;
  • Commitment to the Foundation’s mission;
  • Ability to manage multiple, simultaneous projects; organize and coordinate projects with multiple components and timelines;
  • Attention to detail, including email communications and written materials;
  • Work collaboratively and thoughtfully as part of program staff and grants management teams;
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills;
  • Computer skills utilizing Microsoft Office products and ability to learn grants management database software;
  • A participative work style and the ability to receive feedback; and
  • Ability to interact well with a diverse range of people.

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to use a computer keyboard for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel out-of-state for convenings related to the philanthropic sector
