Samaritans’ purpose is to alleviate despair, isolation, distress and suicidal feelings among individuals in our community; to educate the public about suicide prevention; and to reduce the stigma associated with suicide. For over 40 years, Samaritans volunteers – selected, trained and supported by a dedicated professional staff – have provided compassionate and non-judgmental support free of charge for callers to its Helplines.

Samaritans’ volunteers and staff now provide a full range of suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention services through community education and outreach; phone and text based crisis service Helplines for those in distress; and grief support groups and personal visits which assist families impacted by a suicide loss in their grieving and healing process. Executive Director 

Samaritans’ has an outstanding opportunity for an individual committed to mental health and interested in a career in the Human Resources profession. Reporting to the Executive Director, this position is responsible for all aspects of internal and external HR related matters.  This position carries out responsibilities in the following functional areas: benefits administration, employee relations, training, performance management, onboarding, policy implementation, recruitment- staff and volunteers, affirmative action and employment law compliance.  Samaritans suicide prevention work saves lives with a 24/7 helpline, grief support services and extensive community education and outreach. The ability to connect with the mission, vision and values of Samaritans is vital; familiarity with the issue of suicide prevention is a plus.


  • Responsible for recruitment process by posting, screening and interviewing candidates for both staff and volunteer positions
  • Performs reference checks and works with hiring manager to assist with selection of final candidate and extend offer of employment
  • Prepare paperwork, schedule, and facilitate smooth new hire onboarding process, coordinating departments to deliver an exceptional first-day experience
  • Handle all administrative tasks for onboarding, new hire orientation, and exit interviews
  • Prepare offer letters, termination and severance letters
  • Assist in administering benefits, compensation, and employee performance programs
  • Suggest new procedures and policies to improve efficiency of the HR department and organization as a whole
  • Ensure legal compliance of HR state and federal regulations and applicable employment laws, and update policies and/or procedures as required
  • Assist in the communication, interpretation, and upkeep of employee handbook, employee directory, and organizational chart, and contributes to the development of policies
  • Participate in community and recruiting events
  • Support other activities as requested by Executive Director.


  • Excellent planning and organizational skills
  • Must be detailed oriented and accomplish tasks within given time frames
  • Flexibility in working hours for occasional events in the evening and week-end
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced atmosphere, with little supervision
  • Successfully completes the volunteer befriending training


  • Must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, including communicating with others, listening effectively and gathering information from sources at all levels in an organization and working with varying levels of staff
  • Resolving conflicts and internal issues appropriately.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality where appropriate
  • Functions well as a member of a team. 


  • Bachelor’s degree, HR focus preferred
  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience with hands-on HR experience.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience with recruitment
  • Deep understanding of Labor Laws and employment equity regulations
  • Excellent record keeping skills
  • Computer (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)  and related HR software

$55,000-$60,000 plus generous benefits
