Job Description

Mission of Organization Episcopal City Mission (ECM) is a faith-rooted justice organization that works primarily with Episcopal communities (parishes, chaplaincies, missions etc.), grassroots organizations, and faith-rooted organizations that are addressing racial and economic injustice. ECM builds relationships and collective power across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for racial and economic justice as the expression of God’s transforming love. We do this by developing, convening, mobilizing, and funding prophetic leaders in Episcopal communities, grassroots organizations and faith-rooted organizations. Our 2-3 year goals are:
  • Activate and support a base of Episcopalians across Massachusetts who work for economic and racial justice in partnership with the Diocese and Episcopalian Communities
  • Increase resilience of organizations and leaders in ECM’s social justice network
  • Build an accompaniment network for immigrant justice in the Bristol region through collaboration with local partners
Role of Director of Philanthropy, Learning and Evaluation The Director of Philanthropy and Learning will report to the Executive Director and will work collaboratively with ECM Staff, Board, Grant Committees, grantees, and philanthropic partners. Their primary areas of responsibility will be to:
  • Create a learning agenda that guides our strategic work and organizational culture.
  • Align our grantmaking with organizational values and strategy and support the development of new funds and grantmaking programs aligned with our strategy.
  • Develop process and practice for organizational measurement and evaluation.
  • Deepen existing and establish new relationships across a broad network of grassroots, philanthropic and faith-rooted justice organizations in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Responsibilities and Duties: Philanthropy
  • Develop a coherent grantmaking strategy inclusive of existing and new programs in alignment with ECM mission, values and program strategy and commitments.
  • Work with the Program Manager to develop the Social Justice Network Strategy, including funding, to enable more whole, equitable, and effective leaders across the Commonwealth.
  • Lead the organization to understand and implement elements of Just Transitions, a framework of equitable giving and relationship building with our grantees.
  • Work with Executive Director with fund development through building relationships with major donors and leveraging partnerships with other philanthropic organizations.
  • Supervise and mentor the Grants Manager.
  • Represent ECM with our philanthropic partnerships such as: Solidarity Economy, Census Equity Fund, Social Justice Funders network and any other similar networks.
  • Develop programming that will strengthen the learning, community building, and networks of our racial and economic justice partners and ECM’s role in the broader racial and economic justice movement ecology.
Learning & Evaluation
  • Create an organizational learning agenda, in collaboration with ECM staff, to understand strategies and practices that will maximize the synergies across the organization and increase the impact across our constituencies and ECM’s clarity about its role in the broader racial and economic justice movement ecology.
  • Develop objective performance measurements across all programs, to ensure consistent, high-quality evaluation, and goal setting for all staff.
  • Work with Annual Celebration team to shape this gathering that builds relationships and spotlights the leadership of our constituents and partners.
  • Support Board and Advisory Board subteams that facilitate support and leadership development across constituencies.
  • Supervise and mentor Social Justice Network Program Manager.
Organizational Strategy
  • Partner with the Senior Leadership Team to develop organizational strategy through leading and supporting the staff team and developing and implementing strategies that will maximize the synergies across the organization and ECM’s role
  • in the broader racial and economic justice movement ecology.
  • Work with the Senior Leadership Team to develop ECM’s strategic decision making process that discern when/how we work with our partners.
  • Work with the Senior team to develop ECM’s Communication’s Strategy and Fund Development plan.
  • Lead Senior team to develop ECM’s Learning Agenda and Philanthropic strategy work that will keep us on track to reach our vision, mission, and goals and support the strengthening of staff culture.
Organizational Culture
  • Work with the Senior Leadership Team to develop ECM’s culture and commitment to learning and our values through the use of staff meetings, retreats and other gatherings.
  • Work with the Senior Leadership Team to hire, onboard, and support staff members at ECM.
  • Work with the Senior Leadership Team on Human Resources, Administration, and Internal Communications.
  • Work with the Program Manager to develop a set of training tools in terms of organizing and core competencies for ECM.
Key Qualifications: This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual with team management experience to lead our grantmaking efforts and to develop and implement our learning agenda and measurement and evaluation system. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the ECM staff team, Board and grassroots and faith-rooted partners. As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must believe in the core values of ECM (transformational learning, liberation and equity, spirituality and faith, purposeful action and collaboration and partnership) and be driven by the mission of racial and economic justice. Beyond that, we are seeking a candidate with energy and skills to be part of and support a collaborative, high-performing, bright, diverse team. Specific requirements include:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
  • At least 10 years of experience with at least three in a team management role.
  • Track record delivering strong results.
  • Experience in grantmaking and philanthropy.
  • Demonstrated success developing and evaluating program models and successfully operationalizing innovative programs.
  • Strong project management skills managing complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable success and program growth.
  • Proficient using technology for management reporting and experience working to develop and implement program evaluation systems.
  • Proven ability to work with integrity, efficiency, flexibility, and good humor.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide array of people
  • junior and senior, church, for-profit and nonprofit leaders, and from diverse ethnic, cultural and class backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated results in managing through complex systems and proven experience negotiating collaborative agreements.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills – transparent and direct.
  • Self-starter, self-disciplined.
