MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership (MENTOR) is the unifying champion for expanding quality youth mentoring relationships in the United States. For more than 25 years, MENTOR has served the mentoring field by providing a public voice; developing and delivering resources to mentoring programs nationwide; and promoting quality for mentoring through evidence-based standards, innovative research and essential tools. MENTOR has developed and supports a national network of Affiliates that provide regional, state and local leadership and infrastructure necessary to support the expansion of quality mentoring relationships. Together, we engage with the private, public and nonprofit sectors to ensure that all youth have the support they need through mentoring relationships to succeed at home, school and, ultimately, work.

Position Summary

MENTOR seeks a Director of Finance to play an integral role in supporting the effective, efficient and strategic management of the organization to ensure the organization achieves its plans for growth in alignment with its mission, vision and values. Based in MENTOR’s Boston, MA headquarters, this individual will report to the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer and be a key player supporting MENTOR’s operations and helping fuel its impact. The Director of Finance oversees MENTOR’s operating and investment funds, develops cash management strategies, and provides accurate and timely financial reporting to all divisions within the organization so that each division can effectively and strategically manage their respective programs. The Director also prepares all financial reports needed for senior staff, CEO and Board of Directors review as well as collaborates closely with human resources. The successful candidate will be comfortable working both independently and collaboratively within a small, close-knit team, and thrive in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment. The Director of Finance will manage one staff member.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Operations

  • Manages the accounting function, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash flow.
  • Negotiates and manages working relationships with financial & banking entities and negotiates appropriate credit lines.
  • Oversees the management of all leases, facilities related contracts and other financial commitments.

Financial Reporting

  • Maintains timely and accurate financial statements, forecasts and budget reports that are in accordance with nonprofit generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Ensures all annual, quarterly, and periodic filings to national, state, and local entities are completed.
  • Oversees revenue recognition and tracking.
  • Prepares all supporting information for the annual audit, responsible for managing audit and tax returns processes and filings.
  • Assists the CEO, CFAO and Board Treasurer with financial analysis and reporting as required. Provides the CFAO and the CEO with periodic reports on the financial performance of the organization
  • Works closely with CFAO in preparing financial materials for Board review.

Financial Planning

  • Monitors financial performance by developing forecasts and measuring results and analyzing variances and suggesting corrective actions.
  • Leads an internal process for engaging/educating departmental staff on monthly financial performance, resource allocation, and annual budget preparation/revision.

Compliance

  • Ensures that recordkeeping and record retention in the organization complies with applicable laws, regulations, and contractual obligations.
  • Ensures full compliance with grant requirements, funder covenants, and governmental regulations.

Process Management

  • Ensures compliance with internal financial and accounting policies and procedures.
  • Identifies and undertakes opportunities inside the Finance department for process improvement, cost reduction and systems enhancement that lead to improvements in productivity, quality and customer service for internal and external customers.

Risk Management

  • Maintains the corporate insurance portfolio including D&O, E&O, and property.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of management-level experience in nonprofit financial management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP, particularly of different types of revenue recognition.
  • Excellent skill in financial planning and analysis.
  • Demonstrated strength in presenting information effectively and responding to needs and questions from different internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to formulate, initiate and administer policies and procedures for effective fiscal control.
  • Experience managing government funds a plus.
  • Experience with various accounting software systems.
  • Track record of success in developing a collaborative working environment and implementing integrated systems within finance and accounting that promote accountability and streamlined processes.
  • Ability to complete responsibilities accurately and in a timely manner, often with strict and/or conflicting deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; MBA or CPA useful.
