2013 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner Announced

crucksAs part of the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network’s annual conference, each fall we induct a new member into an exclusive group of outstanding nonprofit leaders across Massachusetts. Lifetime Achievement Award recipients represent decades of nonprofit innovation and spirit. This year, MNN is proud to honor Charles Rucks for his work to improve the quality of life in Springfield and its many neighborhoods.

As the Executive Director of Springfield Neighborhood Housing Services (NHS) for close to 15 years, Mr. Rucks has helped to lift up families and revitalize communities.

Under his leadership, NHS has stabilized and stimulated development within Springfield through homeownership development, recycling of properties, and resident empowerment. As part of its strategy, Springfield NHS acquires blighted and abandoned properties, renovates existing houses or builds new houses on vacant lots.

At NHS, he worked to transform distressed neighborhoods by helping to create sustainable home ownership opportunities for families. In this capacity, he was selected to represent 220 agencies nationwide as a participant at the White House Conference on Minority Homeownership held in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Rucks began his community work with the Urban League of Springfield, where he served as the senior vice president. He also helped form New Leadership Charter School, with the President of the Springfield Urban League, Henry Thomas.

Mr. Rucks attended the US Naval Academy and was an Officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. He received a J.D. from Western New England University and M.B.A. from Cornell University. He holds an honorary degree from Springfield College. He is currently a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, Fannie Mae Massachusetts Partnership Advisory Council, Hampden County Deputy Sheriffs Association and NAACP. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Association of CDC’s and the YMCA of Greater Springfield.

Charles Rucks will be presented with the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual conference on October 29. Solutions 2013: The Intersection of People & Technology, will feature 22 innovative workshops, a keynote addresses from Google Boston’s Steve Vinter, and networking with hundreds of nonprofit leaders.
